Sociology is the study of human social behavior. It explores humanity's diverse ways of interacting, and attempts to understand the institutions and social systems we build and how society organizes itself. The BA in Sociology program is intended to help students become successful practitioners in professional contexts by improving their capacity to analyze, understand, and evaluate social phenomena, enhance awareness of diversity, and develop critical thinking and communication skills. Curriculum focuses on institutions, cultures, family patterns and relationships, gender and ethnic relations, mass media and value systems.

The major prepares students for careers in educational, governmental, and corporate settings, including social work, urban planning, public health, gerontology, medicine, law, criminal justice, and social service agencies. It also prepares students to enter graduate study programs.
